Report a squawk on an aircraft

File a problem with an aircraft, follow and close open squawks, and see what a grounding squawk does to booking and dispatch.

For: School Owner, School Admin, Chief Instructor, Scheduler, Dispatcher, Maintenance Technician · Updated November 6, 2026

A squawk is a problem someone found with an aircraft. School owners, administrators, chief instructors, schedulers, dispatchers and maintenance technicians can file one. If you don't see the Report a squawk form, your role can't file squawks, so tell your instructor or the school's staff about the problem.

Report a squawk

  1. Open Fleet in the sidebar.
  2. Click the aircraft's tail number. Its details open.
  3. Scroll to Squawks. Under Report a squawk, pick a Severity: Cosmetic, Needs attention or Grounding.
  4. Describe the problem in Description, in 3 to 1000 characters.
  5. If a picture helps, add one under Photo (optional).
  6. Choose File squawk.

A Grounding squawk grounds the aircraft until maintenance clears it.

When Manage check-in is offered for a checked-in flight, its window has a Report a squawk form too, for a problem found on that flight.

See open squawks

  • On Fleet, an aircraft with open squawks shows a count, such as "1 open squawk", next to its tail number. A grounded aircraft shows Grounded under Status.
  • In the aircraft's details, Squawks lists its squawks. Switch between Open and Closed.
  • On Maintenance, the Squawks tab lists squawks for the whole fleet, with the same Open and Closed switch.

Resolve or void a squawk

Closing a squawk needs the right to sign off maintenance. By default, school owners, administrators and maintenance technicians have it.

  1. In the aircraft's Squawks, choose Resolve or void on the squawk. On the Maintenance page's Squawks tab, choose Manage instead.
  2. Write what was done, or why it isn't a defect. The note needs at least 10 characters.
  3. Choose Resolve to record the work as a completed corrective maintenance item, or Void to close a squawk filed in error.

On the Maintenance page, Manage also offers Change severity, which needs a reason too.

The aircraft returns to service once no grounding squawk is open on it.

What grounding means

  • A grounded aircraft isn't offered when students request a flight or search Find Availability.
  • Dispatch refuses a grounded aircraft and lists its grounding squawks. Only a school owner can override, with a Grounding override reason.
  • Open squawks that aren't grounding must be acknowledged before dispatch: tick I have reviewed these open squawks.
  • Staff who see the whole schedule get Bookings on grounded aircraft on Schedule. It lists booked flights whose aircraft is grounded, and appears only when there is at least one.
